International Helmet Awareness Day

Jett reminds you to always wear a helmet!

International Helmet Awareness Day (IHAD) is an annual event put on by Riders4Helmets, and is on Saturday, July 12 this year.

Riders4Helmets is a website that strives to educate equestrians on the importance of wearing a properly fitted and certified helmet at all times while mounted. It is run by Lyndsey White, a good friend of Courtney King-Dye – an Olympian who suffered a serious head injury- and Chad Mendell, the former executive director of TheHorse.com.

IHAD began in 2010, and this year there are more than 300 participating tack shops registered in 8 countries. Helmet companies sign on to offer a discount (usually 10-20%) off all their helmets on the day of the event. Some brands participating this year are: Antarès, Charles Owen, GPA, IRH, KEP Italia, One K, Samshield and Tipperary.

My helmet is a Charles Owen GR8 that I love, but I have had it for almost 5 years, which means it’s time to replace it. It is recommended to replace your helmet every 5 years or when you have a fall, or drop it.

I am currently planning to get the Samshield Shadowmatt on IHAD, I just need to check that it fits my head properly! Getting a helmet that fits is much more important than how it looks, so always make sure you are properly fitted for a helmet. I love the venting that the Samshield has to offer, so hopefully it fits my head well! I also like how you can have different size liners for the helmet, so I can have one to wear my hair down, and one to wear my hair up. It is actually safer not to have your hair in your helmet if you fall. I’ll have to learn to wear my hair down when I school, and just have it up for clinics and showing.

Be sure to check out Riders4Helmets on their website, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube sites!

Another product related to IHAD is the Shockbox EQ. I’ve mentioned Shockbox Eq in this Friday 5 post; give it a read, and check them out! I’m looking into getting one once I have a new helmet. With all the new studies being released on the impact of concussions on brain development, we should all take precautions to protect our noggins.
