Dreamers & Schemers Socks
Recently I found a new equestrian small business, and they are all about socks! I’m so excited to share Dreamers & Schemers with you all!
I decided to order the Nava-Yo socks as a reward for a tough exam. They have quickly become my new favourite socks, and I can’t wait to add more to my collection! They’re easy to wash – just toss them in the washer and dryer. Kristy, the brains behind Dreamers & Schemers, describes the socks as a “hybrid nylon knit sock. They are thicker than any equestrian nylon sock on the market, but are still very thin, very stretchable and very breathable.” It’s great because they feel more durable and are more comfortable than the usual equestrian boot sock. I plan to add Moop, I’m on a Boat and Athletic Equestrian’s Bling Shady (named after one of my favourite Twitter accounts) to my sock collection soon!
With D&S being all about custom boot socks, I immediately thought about university and college riding teams and how they should look into getting team socks. OUEA and IHSA teams could add these socks to their team apparel, and also as prizes! I rode on an OUEA team for a few years, and we always wore the same socks available in the campus store; however, they were always way too thick for wearing under boots. D&S socks would be a perfect way to show team spirit in the ring.
Now a little more about Kristy and how D&S was created!
Kristy started riding at 10 years old, and later became a working student for a well-known trainer in the area where she lived, and like many young ‘barn rats’ was there for every weekend, all holidays and summers. When she was 18, Kristy moved to Whistler BC and started working in the action sports industry, for companies like Burton and Hurley. She tried to get back into riding a few times in her 20s, but was still trying to find how to make riding work for her. Eventually she decided horses had to come back into her life; she used her marketing and sales skills gained from the action sports world, and added an equestrian twist to them.
Dapple Gray, which was a popular online and physical boutique in Collingwood, Ontario launched Kristy back into the equestrian world when she and her husband opened it back in early 2010. She learned so much, and met so many people during her two years running the store, and it started her path towards D&S. Shortly after selling DG, Kristy started working for Ogilvy Equestrian launched their social media, and opened another business with her husband. They are certainly an entrepreneurial duo! Their agency works with some amazing equestrian businesses, and they love to be the people behind the scenes helping to move these companies forward.
If she wasn’t busy enough with all of this, Dreamers & Schemers became a reality as a fun passion project. After having run DG for a few years, Kristy knew that her favourite part of running a small business is how easily you can work towards and tailor your business to be what consumers want. She’s made D&S for all of us equestrian fashionistas out there. She loves hearing what you want on a sock. The other day someone suggested sloths on Instagram and avocados on Twitter, and the next day – a pair of socks with sloths, and another pair with avocados were up in the store! She wants to help each and every equestrianista out there express their individuality through socks – one of the few things we can have fun with in a sport with a conservative ‘uniform’! D&S is all about “injecting some silly fun into something [equestrians] all wear everyday.”
Be sure to follow D&S on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook – there is a new phase of D&S launching this fall, and you will want to be one of the first to know!
